How to Ground Your Energy Between Reiki Sessions

When you leave a Reiki session, it’s common to feel lighter, more peaceful, and deeply relaxed, almost as if you’re floating. But as wonderful as that feeling is, it’s also important to stay grounded so your energy can integrate and balance in your daily life. Grounding helps you reconnect to your body and the Earth, keeping your nervous system calm and your energy stable between sessions. Here are some simple, natural ways to ground yourself between Reiki appointments.

Connect with Nature

Nature helps your energy recalibrate instantly. One of the easiest ways to ground your energy is to step outside. Try walking barefoot on grass, sand, or soil (often called earthing). Feel the texture beneath your feet, notice the air on your skin, and take a few deep breaths. It’s okay if being barefoot isn’t your thing, simply take a walk, sit on your porch, or perhaps garden. If you can’t get outdoors, bring nature inside such as keeping a plant near your workspace or holding a small stone or crystal during moments of stress.

Focus on Your Breath

Eventually after a Reiki session you may notice your energy starting to feel scattered or overstimulated again, relaxation starting to dissipate and stress creeping in. Your breath is your anchor. Slow, mindful breathing helps calm your energy and bring you back into the present moment. Simple breathing practices keep your mind and body grounded until you are able to attend your next Reiki session or other form of healing technique. Try this for a few minutes until you feel centered again:

• Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose for a count of four

• Hold for two counts

• Exhale gently through your mouth for six counts

Depending upon where you are, you may choose to close your eyes and/or put your hands at your heart center as you breath. If you feel your shoulders going up when inhaling, try relaxing them as you fill your lungs with air. You should feel your belly expanding when taking a deep inhale. You can change the count of the inhales and exhales above if you wish. Or another breathing technique is the Box Breath: inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4, repeat until feeling calmer.

Nourish and Hydrate

After Reiki, your body continues to release old energy and toxins. Drinking plenty of water and eating healthy, grounding foods like root vegetables, nuts and seeds, protein rich foods, dark chocolate, or herbal teas helps you stay balanced. Think of it as giving your body the physical support it needs to process energetic shifts.

Use Grounding Crystals or Essential Oils

Crystals such as smoky quartz, obsidian, red jasper, hematite, or black tourmaline are wonderful grounding tools. Hold them during meditation, place them in your home or workspace or place one at the foot of your bed when resting. For aromatherapy lovers, try the oils listed below for a comforting sense of stability. Try diffusing them or applying a drop (diluted) to the soles of your feet.

  • Sandalwood: Known for its calming effects.

  • Myrrh: Offers a deep, earthy aroma that promotes grounding.

  • Cedarwood: Provides a warm, woodsy scent that helps with emotional balance.

  • Ginger: Stimulates and energizes while keeping you grounded.

  • Patchouli: Has a rich, earthy scent that is often used for grounding.

Additionally, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, and Vetiver are also known for their soothing effects, which can help with calming stress and anxiety.

Journal or Reflect

Energy healing often stirs up new insights or emotions. Writing them down helps you process your experience consciously and notice patterns of healing over time. Even five minutes of journaling after a session can help your energy settle and your awareness deepen. A brief meditation before journaling can be helpful for centering yourself between healing sessions. You may also wish to write down your dreams as they can be very insightful to the healing needed or taking place after a Reiki session.

Schedule Consistent Reiki Support

Grounding between sessions keeps your progress steady, but regular Reiki treatments continue to nurture your energy field on a deeper level. While one Reiki session provides wonderful stress relief, Reiki is not a quick fix. It usually takes multiple sessions to reach your goal(s). Best practice recommends starting with three sessions and then assessing your progress. Consistent Reiki sessions offer you physical and emotional healing, self-discovery, spiritual growth, and an overall feeling of well-being. Reiki is truly a healing journey.

Final Thoughts

Grounding your energy is a form of self-care that bridges the spiritual and the practical. It helps you live your healing not just experience it during a session. By staying connected to your body, breath, and the Earth, you honor the Reiki energy moving through you and invite more peace, balance, and clarity into your everyday life.
